IN THE NEWS

On December 1st , Ms Magazine celebrated 35 years, and the Feminist Majority Foundation celebrated 20 years of operations with a gala, sold-out event at the Wilshire Ebell Theater. Camryn Manheim, Margaret Cho, Tyne Daly, Ambassador Carol Mosley Braun, Gloria Steinem, Peg Yorkin and many more entertained and recounted the victories of the past 35 years. Over 400 college students attended as well as men and women feminists of all ages. Newscasters suggested that the magazine would not last more than 6 months! It's still going strong. Did you read about the celebration in the newspaper? See it on the news on TV? As is so often the case, this landmark anniversary was ignored in mainstream media. To read a column about the anniversary by Ellen Snortland, click here: http://pasadenaweekly.com/article.php?id=5359&IssueNum=99

New research from RAND released in November as part of their California Preschool Study bolsters the case for investing in effective pre-kindergarten. The studies are the most comprehensive look to date at readiness gaps when children enter school and achievement gaps in the early elementary years in California .

The research confirms what pre-k advocates already know - the achievement gaps evident during the K-12 years exist when kids first enter kindergarten. Many children start school without the basic academic and social skills they need to succeed in the classroom and those who start school behind tend to stay behind throughout their school careers. Effective pre-k helps narrow the achievement gap by addressing that readiness gap.

Here's what State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell, one of the study's requesters, had to say: "Preschool prepares young people for school and helps them develop a love of learning. This is an important step in closing the achievement gap. Solid research tells us that investing in preschool is not only the right thing to do for our children, it is an investment that will pay tremendous economic and social dividends in the long run."

Visit Preschool California's website  or RAND's website to view the full studies and executive summaries.

Women's ENews reports that Falak Jamaani is the first woman to gain a parliamentary seat in an outright victory over male challengers, a sign that Jordan 's political scene is gradually opening its doors to women one seat at a time.

"The quota is a gift from the king of Jordan to the women of Jordan ," Jamaani, who beat out 15 men for her seat in the country's 110-member lower house of parliament, told Women's eNews. "Jordanians now are getting used to women in the parliament.

Jamaani's victory ticks up the number of female parliamentarians to seven from six.

In the Nov. 20 election 885 candidates ran for office, of which 199--nearly a quarter--were women. During the last election in 2003, only 54 women declared their candidacy after King Abdullah II announced a quota system saving six seats for women in the parliament's 110-seat lower house. Women gained the right to vote and stand for office in 1974.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS

Of the 141,900 commercial airline pilots flying the skies today, 5,008 are women. United Airlines was the first to promote a woman to the rank of Captain.

Thanks to Neal Peterson, Insurance Specialist for the following:

When Women Are Treated Badly, Everyone Suffers

A new study in the Journal of Applied Psychology "Witnessing the harassment or uncivil treatment of women at work is bad not only for female employees, but for the productivity of the whole organization.

Male and female employees who said they had witnessed either the sexual harassment of female staff, or uncivil, rude or condescending behavior towards them, tended to report lower psychological well-being and job satisfaction. In turn, lower psychological well-being was associated with greater burn out and increased thoughts about quitting."

GLAMOUR MAGAZINE
2007 WOMEN OF THE YEAR
The Female Presidents of the Ivy League Heads of the Class

(l to r) Amy Gutmann, president of the University of Pennsylvania; Drew Faust, President of Harvard University;
Ruth Simmons, President of Brown University; Shirley Tilghman, President of Princeton University

"Female leadership at the highest level of academia inspires pride and ambition in their female students." Elizabeth Banks, actress, U. Penn grad

In the history of old boys' clubs, one is older and boyier than the rest: the Ivy League. But in July Drew Gilpin Faust, Ph.D., became the first female president of Harvard University , and with her appointment came this milestone: Half of the Ivy schools are now helmed by women.

"I'm not the woman president of Harvard; I'm the president of Harvard," Faust has said.

But that doesn't mean she and her peers are doing it like the boys did. Amy Gutmann, Ph.D., the University of Pennsylvania 's second female leader, aims "to signal that you don't have to act like a man to be successful." Princeton University 's Shirley M. Tilghman, Ph.D. a biochemist and single mother adds, "To be preeminent in science and engineering, we can't exclude half the human race!" By promoting female scholars and urging women into male-dominated fields, these presidents are incubating the next generation of leaders. "There is a new order," says Brown University 's Ruth J. Simmons, Ph.D., a sharecropper's daughter and the first African American Ivy head. The presidents' impact is felt far beyond their campuses. Among the many congratulatory e-mails Faust received was one from a girl in China who wrote that she no longer aspired to be a "woman scientist" but a scientist.

Says Faust: "We need to make sure that young women can imagine all possibilities."

SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE

Thanks to Leigh Adams, Artist in Residence at the Los Angeles Arboretum for letting us know about this.

Dr. Anita Borg (1949-2003) devoted her adult life to revolutionizing the way we think about technology and dismantling barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields. Her combination of technical expertise and fearless vision continues to inspire and motivate countless women to become active participants and leaders in creating technology.

In honor of Dr. Borg's passion, for the past four years, Google has sponsored a scholarship program with the Anita Borg Institute for Women in the U.S. , and more recently, in Europe and Australia . http://www.anitaborg.org/ http://www.google.com/anitaborg/

This year, we're excited to announce the expansion of the program to include Canada , where we're very pleased to offer an opportunity to both undergraduate students and postgraduates, who may apply for CAD$5,000 scholarships. We're looking for women who will carry on the legacy of Dr. Borg, with strong academic backgrounds and demonstrated leadership qualities.

All scholarship recipients and finalists will be invited to visit the Google engineering office in New York City next April for a networking retreat featuring workshops with a series of speakers, panelists, breakout sessions and social activities.

Deadlines:

WOMEN'S HEALTH
What Women Don't Know About Cancer
Survey Reveals Common Misconceptions About Cancer

By Salynn Boyles WebMD Medical News Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD

Thanks to Neal Peterson, Insurance Broker for keeping us apprised of this and other useful articles on WebMD.com

Nearly two-thirds of women mistakenly believe having no family history of cancer means they have a low risk of developing the disease, and most do not know that oral contraceptive use is protective against ovarian and uterine cancer, a new survey shows.

ACOG past president Douglas W. Laube, MD, says the survey findings reveal a "worrisome gap in women's knowledge about cancer." "This knowledge gap, as well as their fears about cancer, may be putting women at risk," he said at a Friday morning media briefing.

Among the highlights from the survey:

  • Two out of three women did not know that the vast majority of cancers occur in women with no family history of the disease. Only about 5% to 10% of breast cancers are thought to be hereditary, according to the American Cancer Society.

"While we know that having a family history of cancer is a risk factor, the fact is that most cancers occur in people with no family history of this disease at all," Laube says. "So those without a family history cannot assume that they are not at risk."

  • Only 11% of women knew that taking oral contraceptives is associated with a reduced risk of ovarian, uterine, and possibly colorectal cancer.

"Unfortunately the pill remains one of the best kept secrets in medicine," Laube says, adding that oral contraceptive use is still linked in many women's minds with an increased risk of breast cancer, even though many studies have found little or no association.

  • Only about half of the women surveyed felt they were doing enough to reduce their cancer risk, and 10% said they had done nothing to reduce their risk in the past year.
  • Almost one in three women (29%) reported that they did not see a health care provider on a regular basis and had not had a Pap test or mammogram during the previous year.
  • About a third of women without regular medical care cited lack of health insurance or other economic barriers as the reason.

"The greatest potential to further reduce cancer deaths in women will come from efforts to improve screening and access to preventive health care, particularly for women without insurance," Laube says.

New Colorectal Cancer Guidelines

The guidelines call for most average-risk women to begin screening at age 50, with repeat screenings every 10 years or as needed. Women should be screened earlier if they have a family history of the disease or of adenomatous polyps, a personal history of colorectal cancer or polyps, or inflammatory bowel disease.

Advantages of colonoscopy over other screening methods include its ability to visualize the entire colon and to remove potentially dangerous polyps that could become malignant.

"While we want ob-gyns to encourage this method, they should still discuss the advantages and limitations of the other screening options with their patients," says Carol Brown, MD, of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center . "The bottom line is we want women to get tested by whichever method they are most likely to accept and follow through with."

Lung Cancer Bucking the Trend

While the death rate from many cancers has either declined or remained steady in recent years, lung cancer deaths among women has climbed.

Fully 80% of lung cancers in women are caused by smoking, and 5% to 10% may be due to 'passive' exposure to cigarette smoke, Sharon Phenlan, MD, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, said Friday.

Though more women get more breast cancer than lung cancer, far fewer breast cancer patients die. In 2007, the American Cancer Society estimates that 70,880 women will die of lung cancer, compared with 40,460 who will die of breast cancer.

CURL UP WITH A GOOD BOOK

Gender & Religion
By Barbara Crandall, M.D.

Reviewed by Carolyn Howard-Johnson, Award-Winning Author

Some things are slow in coming. Not that there are not books that would have helped me be the woman I am today out there, but how I wish I had this one when I was twenty.

"Gender & Religion" is a no-nonsense book with content that mirrors its title and it's premise--that religion is at least in part responsible for the plight of women the world over--is not new. The thing is, this book examines the history of women within the history of the great religions of the world, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

"Gender & Religion" is well-researched. The author, Barbara Crandall, M.D., is a woman of conviction but she has an academic background which gives this book a measured viewpoint and therefore makes it one that a reader can trust. It should be required reading in every university women's studies program in the nation and others everywhere should tuck it under the pillow of their daughters on, say, their 18th birthday. Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy , India and Indonesia
By Elizabeth Gilbert

This is one of those books that I didn't want to end. I relished it from the beginning. Pizza lovers: there is a description of a pizza that Elizabeth ate while in Italy that will make your mouth water and perhaps get other juices going too. In Italy she considers that "pleasure" is not a bad word. That despite our driven way of life in the U.S. , maybe we are missing out on life as we push so hard.

In India I traveled along with her through her inner journey as she broke free from the past, and in Indonesia simplicity and gentleness shines through as she falls in love and begins to put together a new life.

I wouldn't mind taking a year off for such a journey, don't know about you. But if like me you are going to stay put, do treat yourself to a few hours with this book, you'll be glad you did such a nice thing for yourself. Click here to Buy from Amazon
