SPOTLIGHT ON OUR VOLUNTEER, MAIA

Maia is a new Volunteer with Fifty-Fifty Leadership:

My name is Maia and I am honored to embark on this journey with the women of Fifty-Fifty, women committed to make a significant contribution to social justice for all women.  I am embarking on my most challenging year of High School and intend to offer all that I can to Fifty-Fifty.

I am a soon-to-be 17-year-old, a bilingual/bicultural Latina who is passionate about learning and loving.  I have grown up passionate about social justice, family, friendship, a strong spiritual life and the idea that life is a creative venture.  I have a strong affection for travel, exploring different cultures, writing/journalism, literature, languages, science, math, art, music, dance, singing, the environment and running.

I am a straight-A student, run on a varsity cross-country team and am thinking of going into Journalism, Pediatrics and/or Orthodontia.  I have worked with Union Station Foundation, City of Hope , interning with a Pasadena Pediatric Practice, and working for CCN, Crown City News, a local cable television station, calling in for stories, editing the "B" roll, and writing script for the newscaster.  I look forward to making a difference and working under the wings of such strong, committed, as well as openhearted women as Pauline and Ellen!

IN THE NEWS

One-woman democracy machine

Six days a week, Sylvia Levin travels around the city signing up new voters. "All parties are welcome," she says.

On September 14th, Sylvia was honored by the Los Angeles City Council for her dedication to the election process.  Bob Pool reported in the Los Angeles Times that Sylvia Levin spent her birthday in Malibu where she set up her card table and chairs outside the First Bank branch there and spent two hours asking passersby at the Malibu Colony Plaza shopping center if they're registered to vote.

Every Friday is Malibu day for Levin. Saturdays are Venice days. Sundays are spent at the farmer's market in Westwood Village . Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, she's outside the post office at Westwood's Federal Building .  Six days a week for 34 years Levin has walked or traveled by bus around Los Angeles to sign up people to vote. So far she's registered more than 46,700. She knows: she's kept track.

"I want to see everyone who is an American citizen be able to vote," she explained Thursday afternoon from behind her battered card table outside Westwood's post office.  "Voting gives you the right to voice what's in your heart on paper -- on the ballot," she said. "People who are registering for the first time in their lives leave this table just flying. They know they've taken a big step."

"She's an example of a person who has done more to make democracy work than anybody I know," said the Westside councilman Bill Rosendahl, who wrote the resolution to be presented this morning.  That Levin takes public transportation to her sign-up sites also impresses Rosendahl. "It tells you that our society must change its attitude toward senior citizens," he said Thursday.

"If she cares enough at age 90 that everyone who is eligible is registered, shouldn't we all care?" asked Bob Weiner, a veteran Washington political organizer whose work has included a stint as chief of staff of the House Aging Committee.

Although she once registered 60 new voters one day in 1996, now she averages about four sign-ups a day. She won't say whether she's registered more Republicans or Democrats.  "All parties are welcome. Everyone is important," she said.

"Are you registered?"

Clinton Global Initiative

Former President Bill Clinton is joined by Chris Rock, Shakira, Bono and Wyclef Jean

The Clinton Global Initiative is a non-partisan catalyst for action, bringing together a community of global leaders to devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges.

Ellen Snortland, Co-Chair of Fifty-Fifty Leadership and a reporter for the Pasadena Weekly and Ms. Magazine, says she was "surrounded by people who are committed to a world that works for everyone and are serious about it. They all know the 8 Millennium Development Goals and use them as a road map. There are 52 current and former heads of state as well as many CEOs of NGOs and private sector corporations too" attending the conference.
"Climate change not only applies to the weather. There's got to be a cultural climate change which is important and yet sometimes invisible" says Snortland. We need to be "a part of the invisible climate change. It's very difficult and highly vital to stand for non-visible things like: possibility, vision and peace".

Women Board Directors (WBD) Align With Strong Performance at Fortune 500 Companies

Catalyst Inc., an organization that monitors women in business, released the results of a study today that shows that financial measures excel where women serve on the Board.

Companies with women on the Board outperform those that do not by 53% (ROI) and by 66% return on invested capital.  Read more at www.catalystwomen.org

CNN reports that 9% of the Standard & Poors 500 companies have no women on their boards - that's 45 companies including Apple and NewsCorp.  Women make up only 1 of 6 board seats at the top companies.

And for companies that are the leaders in recruiting, hiring, promoting, and retaining talented women at all levels, companies that demonstrate a strong commitment - as part of company leadership and strategic policy - to moving more women into the most coveted positions, PINK magazine points to:

  1. American Express Co.
  2. Heller Ehrman LLP
  3. Kelly Services
  4. Aflac Inc.
  5. FedEx Services
  6. Grant Thornton LLP
  7. Turner Broadcasting System Inc.
  8. Wachovia Corp.

Salons to look for evidence of domestic violence

Excerpted from an article by ALEX DOBUZINSKIS, LA Daily News

A small patch of hair missing or a bruise on the cheek - those telltale signs of potential abuse on a woman could quickly catch the eye of a beautician.  With that in mind, officials are reaching out to salons to hook them up with an anti-domestic abuse program.

Glendale officials say they took the first steps to bring the program to California , and Los Angeles County officials announced Thursday that they have joined the effort.

"Because it's a social environment and you build up a relationship with your beauty operator - with your hairdresser - and a friendship really, you'll share with them things that you might not share with other people," said Lana Haddad, who works for the Glendale Commission on the Status of Women.

Officials hope that trust between salon workers and their clients could bridge the gap for some women between silently suffering abuse and getting help.   The "Cut it Out" campaign, which is already in most states, is sponsored by the National Cosmetology Association and Southern Living at Home.  The organizations send salons posters and pocket-size booklets with phone numbers and advice on how victims can get help. The booklets go in the salons' restrooms.  Salon owners and workers can go online to www.cutitout.org to get tips on how to identify the signs of domestic abuse.

"This program is a really creative way to reach a huge number of women in your community in a very subtle, discreet way," Karla Kerlin, Chair of the Glendale Women's Commission said.

Glendale officials in the coming days plan to mail out material to salons in the city to recruit them to the program.  County Supervisor Gloria Molina said the county will soon do its own recruiting of salons. "We're hoping to spread the word to professionals in hair salons everywhere about warning signs their clients may exhibit indicating that they might be domestic violence victims," Molina said.

How do you learn to be a poised reporter and interviewer in front of the camera and know what it takes to produce a show?  Just ask Tami Devine of Crown City News.  She will tell you that being a reporter for a network affiliate in a small market in Kentucky gives you great experience because you have to be a one-woman-band.  Tami and her husband currently produce Crown City News, a local news show for the Pasadena , California area which plays on cable channel 56 on Monday evenings at 6:00 p.m. (PST) and streams at their website, www.crowncitynews.com .

Fifty-Fifty Leadership Co-Chair, Pauline Field was quoted in Business Week Online, talking about what to do with "sluggish" prospects.  Click to read the article:  Business Week Article .

Okay, he's not a woman, but Darrell Dansby is not only a big supporter of women's rights ("I grew up with 3 sisters and learned to admire them"), but he has a business helping women, and men, grow their businesses.  See his website at www.TheGrowthCoachAndYou.com and email him at Darrell@thegrowthcoachandyou.com .

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Pauline,

I have read your newsletter twice and forwarded it to several of my friends.  It is a great focused view of the world of women.  So much of what defines our awareness (especially in TV/Movies) is the man's perspective. I thrive on the woman(feminine)-centered focus, not to exclude men but as a perspective.

October 4th - 7th
World Conference on Japanese Military Sexual Slavery

Honoring the bravery and suffering of the survivors

University of California , Los Angeles ("UCLA") campus

Thanks to HongJwa Lee for telling us about this conference

The World Conference is the first global gathering of scholars, non-governmental organizations, human rights activists, attorneys, artists, and most importantly, survivors, to coalesce around a unified plan of action for obtaining the recognition and justice due to aging survivors of Japan 's Military Sexual Slavery brutally imposed during World War II (euphemistically known as "comfort women"). Japan 's "comfort women" system was the largest sexual trafficking of women known to modern history, for which Japan has steadfastly refused to apologize, despite pressure from the United States and abroad.

Through this multi-disciplinarian and multi-media conference, we intend to 'right' history's wrongs about the human rights abuses committed against comfort women and solidify the international coalition calling for reparations to victims and their bereaved families. Especially in light of the recent passage of House Resolution 121 (the Japanese Apology Bill), the Conference will build on existing pressure for the Japanese government to admit to the crimes committed, give accurate information in textbooks, provide an official apology through a resolution of the "Japanese Diet", and pay full and fair restitution. The conference will also address contemporary issues in gender-based and sexual violence in wartime, trafficking, and modern-day sexual slavery.

The Conference Is Open to the Public and Free of Charge for Days 1, 2 and 4! Please join us in making history.

Writer's Workshop:  Art That Pays

Thanks to Margalo Ashley-Farrand, Attorney for letting us know about this

ART THAT PAYS is a writing workshop that I have created to write from this space of creation; a place where we will manifest a writing practice that can lead to publication.

The first three sessions : We will look at the mechanics of creation from the deepest levels of Being. We will learn how to turn autobiographical fragments into successful narrative or poetic writings.

The middle three sessions : We will develop the practice of writing, establishing tools and habits that will serve us for a lifetime, and learning the art of revision. We'll read relevant literature and essays and put into practice through in-class exercises the habits required for the ongoing process of the writing life.

The final four sessions : We will get your work seen and read at whatever level is appropriate. Together, we will evaluate the work and submit it for publication.
